Victim Location 45314
Type of a scam Rental
A text message was received from the indicated phone number. The victim had posted an ad on a university website, and apparently the scammer found that ad, and also located real estate listings in the victim’s area. He then tried to establish a rental agreement with the victim. The victim had sensed some unusual details, such as not being able to schedule a viewing inside the property (was told the owner lived in Maryland and didn’t want to involve a third party in showing their property). The scammer asked for details regarding the victim to be texted to him, including a copy of a driver’s license. When being asked to send money without a signed contract, the victim realized for certain that the situation must be a scam. The victim then checked the county Auditor’s website, found the name of the actual property owner, and contacted the actual owner to verify the offer that had been received was a scam.
